poetry blog

“Our work is to love the world” says Mary Oliver.

To notice, to pay attention, to love—Is this not our highest calling?  Could it be as simple and as profound, as holding beauty in reverence, noticing and cherishing it.

To truly see beauty is to step fully into the still moment. Through Louise’s photography we are invited into a sacred space where the magnificence of life, often overlooked in our hurried ways comes alive.  Paired with poetic expression this blog seeks to deepen the resonance of these moments and inspire reflection.

Woodcarver’s Bowl

See the sunlight in dancing leaves
And branch-formed arms cradling breath
Rising toward the light, year upon year.

There are lives fully told
In the turning of a bowl

Maple, Butternut, Ash, and Oak,
Even the Woodcarver’s dreams...
All laid bare by the spinning lathe,
And the chisel’s scrape.

Epochs revealed turn by turn,
Times of plenty, then of dearth,
Fire’s sear or the sap spile mark;
Drought and disease and the borer’s trace.

Hardship etched in the broken rings,
Scars extolled in the vessel's wholeness --
Depth and character revealed,
Resurrected in the polish.

Behold now! See the sunlight in dancing leaves
And branch-formed arms cradling breath
Rising toward the light, year upon year.
Essence now embraced in a carved sphere.

The woodcarver’s bowl
Turned for eyes that can see --
Time in a hallowed tree,
And the dreamer’s soul.

Maple, Butternut, Ash and Oak,
Shaped by love — again,
Now to hold, caress,
 And lift anew.

Garden

As battles rage at gardens’ edges
Pulse of life breaks through the dark.
And from beneath the sumac shade,
A wafting scent of lilies
Draws to victory in the shadows,
Inviting…

Look here look deep.
Listen to the whispers in the shifting breeze
Beckoning
“This way — here.
Find the beauty hidden near.”

Move bravely in the dimming light
Where radiance finds its own
And darkness becomes shadow
Of luminescent glow.

As eyes see clear and heart would lift,
Behold the wonder that lies here.
Where light and shadow intertwine
Lies the essence of the marvel.

From brooding twisted tangled root
Springs forth a garden jewel.

In the twilight of our lives, We
Born of love’s blazing reach
Come at last to time’s waning push.

In the fading of the moment who is it that asks:
What have we made of it?… the light.
How have we fashioned the streak?
Has the shaped habit opened fresh taste and rung new sound ?
Has it harbored unique presence in the vast and constant flow?
Has it gathered with flickering light everywhere?
To grow and rise,
With the grand spiral dance of stars — moving
To ignite the looming dark.
With new beauty — Yours.

In the covering darkness
What you alone have set ablaze now answers
In the hands that comb your knotted hair
and in the tears that flow with love and tenderness for you.

This is the love you have kindled

Rising

I looked into your eyes one day
And saw the tears before you felt them.
Locked away
By a sorrow only you could know.
No love let near
So deeply rooted was the fear.
Strength and beauty
Frozen in the wait.

Picture
Flow and action moving over Earth Spine
Through fireweed and wild white asters
Nestled in grasses
It’s in the movement--
The sound of air rushing by my ears.

Ahead, the soft, winding path
Lapping over earth,
Rising, dipping, turning,
Like waves over the vast.

Fields of dancing grasses
Slip beneath spinning wheels,
As if the path itself
Were consumed by intense desire.

And then it happens--
A death, of sorts.

I and the bike cease to exist.
Somehow, it is all
Just perfect movement:
Flow and action,
Moving over earth spine,
Through fireweed and wild white asters,
Nestled in grasses.

They and I,
Paradoxically,
Indistinguishable
In the living landscape.

The stars know this.
Now—through me.

And as a gift
For this death, of sorts,
Their constant presence and beauty
Reminding each other of who we are:
Attentive,
In the giving
Of the one to the other --
Endlessly cycling
Love.

Epiphany

Let every quivering atom in this body
Meet the same in every rustling leaf
Join me in this song.
Come, sing with me
This dawning of the day.
Let every quivering atom in this body
Meet the same in every rustling leaf.
Vibrant essence streaming through an ether
Like notes on nature's grand staff.
We are love’s texture, shape and colour
Stirred by a star's pulsing radiance,
Sounding the universe with a song that time forgot.
For this is harmony and this is miracle.
I and you distinct, wind and leaf distinct,
Manifestations in a cacophony of existence
Made whole through eyes and ears attuned,
Merging in a symphonic melody
Of one great Being!
Pray that each plays its part
And know that in you and me
An epiphany hangs in the balance.
So join with me and together
We shall celebrate
Birth of the possible.

On The Road To Emmaüs

               "Radiance that wakes the stone
              Become Spark!"

If my heart grieves
It is for the loss of light’s bright ways.
Emptiness beckons always,
Offering the illusion of itself,
Pounding at being, scraping away at faith,
Nurturing the myth that each of us stands alone.
Radiance that wakes the stone
Become Spark!
Strike the hardened heart.
Admit dream’s reach once again.
To see by eyes not mine alone,
And hear with ears attuned to Heaven’s chorus,
To feel with a heart that has travelled the heavy road
Yet dance still to the lightness of being.
