Jour 15 - Les arbres de Morro Alto / Day 15 - Trees of Morro Alto

Retour sur le plateau de Morro Alto, le point culminant de Flores. Vous connaissez peut-être ma passion pour les arbres. J’adore cet endroit où ils ont les pieds dans la mousse et la tête dans le vent. Ces arbres sont littéralement torturés par les rafales, et ils en portent les cicatrices. Impossible de se faufiler entre eux (il faut absolument rester sur la route). Ils poussent dans une tourbière, où la mousse, gorgée d’eau, est incroyablement épaisse. J’ai tenté l’aventure, mais j’ai vite « callé ». J’avais peur de m’enfoncer dans cette éponge géante et de disparaître à jamais !

Back on the Morro Alto plateau, the highest point of Flores. You might know about my passion for trees. I love this place where the trees have their feet snug in the moss and their heads in the wind. These trees are literally tortured by the gusts, and they bear the scars. It’s impossible to weave through them (you absolutely have to stay on the road). They grow in a peat bog, where the moss, soaked with water, is incredibly thick. I tried to venture in, but I quickly got stuck. I was afraid of sinking into this giant sponge and disappearing forever!

Le climat atlantique humide agit comme un modèle écologique, créant la « zone brumeuse » avec des vents très forts et de fortes précipitations, favorisant l’apparition de tourbières où le genévrier des Açores prédomine, donnant à cette zone élevée un aspect particulier et distinct du reste de l’île. Le point de vue situé là-bas, à haute altitude, offre un panorama depuis Morro Alto sur un paysage de végétation endémique assez variée, avec de vastes massifs de forêts de laurisilva caractéristiques de la Macaronésie, ce qui en fait un lieu classé de paysage protégé.

The humid Atlantic climate acts as an ecological modeler creating the “foggy zone” with very strong winds and high rainfall, promoting the appearance of peat bogs, where the Azores juniper predominates, which gives this high zone a peculiar and distinctive appearance from the rest of the island. The viewpoint located there is at a high altitude and looks out from Morro Alto over a landscape of endemic vegetation quite varied, with extensive massifs of laurisilva forests characteristic of Macaronesia and is therefore a classified place of protected landscape.
